Harry Potter Mania

July 20, 2007

Here’s some more press we’ve received about our upcoming grownup Harry Potter party, some of it completely made up but all of it fun:

The New York Times:

Word, Greenpoint, Brooklyn: A customer told the owner, Christine Onorati, that the last time she went to a “Harry Potter” party, a 6-year-old flipped to the end of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and screamed, “Snape killed Dumbledore!” So Ms. Onorati decided to hold an adults-only party. She’ll be serving sangria in a cauldron, running a trivia contest and giving away “Harry Potter” pens and notebooks. The store’s event space is being transformed into a dungeon, but Ms. Onorati insists that the adults-only theme extends only to the alcohol. 126 Franklin Street, (718) 383-0096.

Daily News:

Adults only! The indie shop cards for underage wizards, so grown fans can groove with “magical punch,” a deejay and Potter swag. Reservations required. 10 p.m., 126 Franklin St., Brooklyn. (718) 383-0096.

The Brooklyn Paper:

Mature magic

The students of Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft will be the only teens in the room at Word bookstore on July 20. While the shop is having a party to celebrate the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the final book in the popular series, no kiddie conjurers will be allowed.

“It’s really the adults who are reading ‘Harry Potter,’” Word owner Christine Onorati told GO Brooklyn. While kids usually swarm her store, Onorati is hoping to give the expected 100 grown-ups a place to drink from her cauldron without having to dodge mini-Voldemorts under foot.

Adult fans like Judy Nylen, 65, of Sunset Park, are glad to have the chance to mingle and enjoy themselves outside of the all-ages events at other area stores.

“Every year at Halloween I have my own ‘Harry Potter’ party for adults,” she said. “I’m just obsessed with it.”

The Word party will take place at 11 pm on July 20 at Word (126 Franklin St. at Milton Street in Greenpoint). Admission is free. For information, call (718) 383-0096.

Gothamist:
